Home Security FAQ's
Here’s a list of answers to some of the most common home security questions. If you have a question you don’t see here, send us a comment, and we’ll do our best to add it to the FAQ.
Q: Does it cost money to get a customized quote?
A: Companies customize their home alarm systems based on individual needs. Therefore, many security companies will send a representative to inspect your home or office, with no cost or obligation, to provide you with a quote.
Q: Am I responsible for testing my fire monitoring system regularly?
A: Yes. It is your responsibility to make sure that your fire monitoring system is in good working order. This includes regularly checking and replacing the system’s batteries. To maintain the integrity of any fire monitoring system, it is also recommended that a qualified person periodically test the system about once a month. Most companies provide this service to their customers free of charge. If the testing mechanism does not work properly, the smoke/heat detector should be replaced immediately.
Q: What are the benefits of a cellular monitoring security system?
A: The main benefit is that the homeowner can receive security alerts over via their cell phone, as opposed to being contacted via a land line. In most cases, homeowners choose to discontinue land line service to save on their monthly bills.
Q: How does the help button for personal safety devices work?
A: Personal help buttons usually come in either a waterproof wristband or pendant that can be worn around the neck. The personal medical alerts can work as an intercom service and can be pushed in case of an emergency. By pushing the help button, a person can be connected to a security representative for assistance. If the person pushing the button does not respond, 911 will be called to send the paramedics and notify anyone that is on the users emergency contact list.
Q: I rent my home/apartment. Can I still purchase a home alarm system?
A: Yes, renters are able to leverage monitored home alarm systems for their home, whether it is an apartment, townhome or a single family home. Many alarm companies require written permission from the landlord/owner of the property along with a 36 month contract from the tenant before they will provide service.
Q: Does having a home alarm system help lower my homeowners insurance?
A: Yes, having a home alarm system can help you save money on your homeowners insurance, in some cases up to 20%. Special discounts are also available for AARP and USAA members. Take a look at our special insurance savings page to learn more.
