Social media Web sites have rapidly become one of the most convenient ways to communicate with friends, family, colleagues and the public. However, caution must be taken not to over-share travel plans with your “friends” and “followers”.

You do not want to put an “I’m not home” bulletin out for all to see -- even if you take the necessary home safety precautions such as having your mail stopped, setting outdoor lights on timers and locking all doors and windows. Announcing on Twitter that you will be traveling for 14 days lets potential burglars and thieves know that your home will be empty.

Posting that you are out of town or updating about your travels also puts your family at risk. You don’t want to broadcast to everyone that your spouse or children are home alone.

Tell those close to you via direct message, e-mail or verbally if you want them to be aware of your travel plans.

Once you have returned home use social media outlets to post photographs and boast about your adventures.
