Simple Summertime Home Security Tips
By Frank Santamorena July 9, 2012 | 10:00 AMPosted in: Home Security Tips, Personal Safety, Family The summertime is full of so many fun things to do. We seem to all be leaving our homes more
frequently during this time of year.
Moreover, it’s a spontaneous “let's go”.
So it becomes easy to leave the back kitchen door unlocked, the alarm
un-armed, and the windows left open.
It’s not that we forget-it’s that we’re just running out of the house
more often. So let’s all take a moment
and remember to make a contentious effort and start with these simple home security tips that you can do to
immediately lower the likelihood of crime at your home. Remember-criminals don’t like to work too
hard — any delay increases their chances of getting caught. So please remember
to make all entrances into your home as inconvenient as possible. Before we run
out the door, at the very minimum, let’s make certain that all the doors and
windows are locked before we leave.
Those basement windows need to be protected, so remember to please
lock them too. If you are going away for a vacation, trim the shrubbery and
trees so there are fewer places to hide; and so your neighbors can see your
home more clearly. Also remember that your ladders shouldn’t be left near the house,
giving intruders an easy access to upper floors. Help to prevent costly
vandalism by installing glass break
detectors or covering your glass windows with Lexan®, Plexiglas® or some other
form of window security.
You should also remove possible fuel sources. Keep gasoline and
flammable solvents in a locked storage area away from your home. Finally, take
a look at night to see if your outside lighting is adequate. Criminals need to work out of sight or in
darkness. You can deny them that cover easily, with a little planning and
foresight. Make sure all sides and entrances are well lit. If possible, keep one of the cars in the
driveway- and ask your neighbors to pick up the mail and your paper deliveries.
Finally, ask your local police to regularly patrol your home and neighborhood.
