Sirens & Strobe Lights: Vital Home Security Elements
By Home Security Source Jun 23, 2009 | 4:55:00 pmPosted in: Burglary & Loss Prevention, Home, House, Security Lights As part of a home security system, a siren serves two main functions. First, it can scare away burglars, as most will flee if a siren goes off while they attempt to break into a home. Secondly, sirens can alert your neighbors of an emergency at your home.
Most sirens usually have different types of tones. One represents an intrusion attempt, while another tone represents a fire emergency at the home. Depending upon which home security system you have, these features may vary.
In addition to sirens, strobe lights can also be a great deterrent for burglars. As with sirens, strobe lights can provide a visual indication to your neighbors that there is an emergency at your home. Strobe lights are also especially useful in that they can help the authorities find your home quicker in the event of a fire or burglary.
If you are thinking of adding sirens or strobe lights to your home security system, keep these tips in mind:
• If possible, install two sirens (one indoors, one outdoors) as part of your home security system, and go for the loudest ones you can find
• If using only one siren, be sure to locate it on the outside of the home, preferably towards the front, as this will warn your neighbors of an emergency situation
• If installing strobe lights, make sure they are visible from all sides of the house – this will maximize their effectiveness in fending off an intruder
• Make sure to test your home security system every few months to ensure sirens and strobe lights are functioning properly
