Being trapped during a blizzard could mean you are literally snowed into your home with no way of leaving. In these cases, power lines and electricity are often compromised leaving you with even less choices. If you ever find yourself in this situation, here is a rundown of what you will need.
Flashlights, extra batteries and candles. Keep a flashlight with extra batteries handy so you won’t have to feel out your surroundings, possibly hurting yourself or someone else, in case the electricity goes out.
Canned and non-perishable foods. Unless you have a wood burning stove, you will likely be eating cold food if the power goes out. If this is the case, make sure to have items that are safe to eat without being cooked. Another good tip is to have a manual can opener along with canned food.
Extra blankets and quilts. These will come in handy, especially if your main heating source fails. If you have a wood burning stove, store extra kindling and wood for heat and cooking.
Medical supplies. This is very important if someone falls sick or has an ongoing condition where medications are required, such as diabetes. Also, make sure you have a fully stocked
first aid kit on hand.
Know the lay of your house. Do you know how to shut off the water valves to
prevent freezing pipes, or which circuit breakers go to what part of your home? Make sure you know how to control your home to prevent any further damage in the event of a blizzard.
While it’s important to be ready for anything at home during a blizzard, another good idea is to prepare a
vehicle emergency kit in case you get caught in bad weather while out on the road.
