Love is a wonderful feeling and can make life seem sweeter and colors brighter. In fact, many lovebirds will be celebrating Valentine’s Day this month. But sometimes, the love fades and transforms what was once sticky sweet, into a bitter breakup. While most relationships may not end this way, it’s important to be on high alert when you are ending any relationship, especially a volatile one.

In recent news story out of Michigan, one man scorned by his ex-girlfriend who had just ended their relationship, was so distraught he broke into her house to get revenge. He ransacked her home, tearing up all of her clothes. He was later charged with second-degree home invasion and placing harmful objects in food.

If you are going through a bad breakup, make sure you are putting your safety first. If you gave your ex a key to your place, get the locks changed immediately. Make people close to you aware of the breakup so they are in the know. Have a neighbor keep an eye on your place while you are gone. If you are feeling particularly threatened, notify the local authorities. In addition, it’s a smart idea to invest in a home security system, especially if you live alone.
