Crime Prevention Event: National Night OutOne of the best ways to beat crime is to be aware and educated. That is the idea behind National Night Out held the first Tuesday of every August. This year on August 3 communities will come together to celebrate the annual crime prevention awareness event. The event is organized by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

The first one was held in 1981 and encouraged people to put on their lights and conduct front porch vigils or to walk in groups in their neighborhoods. Now NNO in many areas includes a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events.

NNO is a national event designed to do the following:

• Heighten crime prevention awareness
• Generate support for and participation in, local anticrime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Many police departments across the U.S. are hosting fun family events meant to give citizens safety advice, tips and information in a fun atmosphere with food, games and activities. Look to see what is happening in your community.
