National Walk to School Day slipped by last week without much fanfare, but let it be an incentive for your children to get some extra exercise and stay out of pollution-causing automobiles.

It is also a great reminder for parents to walk with younger children. Ideally, at least one parent should do so every day. There is a lot that can happen from the time kids leave their home. Children can run into bullies, gangs, drug dealers and sex predators. Walking with your child to school (and back home) can provide that extra degree of protection they may need to safely make the trip.

Recently an Indiana third grader on his way to school was pushed to the ground, hit and kicked badly enough that he had to be taken to a local emergency room. There were no adults present and so far, none of the attackers have faced any disciplinary action. This type of story is reported far too often.

Schools are responsible for the safety of your children once they get on a school bus or step onto school property. Until then, it’s your job to protect them.

Consider making every day Walk to School Day. Enjoy a few extra minutes with your child, some exercise and the peace of mind of knowing he or she is safe. If you can’t walk every day, ask a neighbor with children at the same school to take turns walking with the kids.
