My Secret Valentine's Day Fantasy [SURVEY]

It seems I've been spending a lot of time thinking about Valentine's Day this year - way more than I used to. That's probably because I'm remarried and crazy in love with my husband. It's our first Valentine's Day as husband and wife.

I always thought Valentine's Day was a conspiracy between florists, chocolate manufacturers and the jewelry association to exploit consumers. Actually I still do. It ranks up there as one of the most over-hyped contrived holidays there is
BUT….when you've found true love…OK, I'll admit I'm buying into it a little bit. What I haven't done is bought into the traditional idea of my husband coming home with a dozen ridiculously priced roses and a heart-shaped box of chocolates that I'm not going to like anyway (I never understood the idea of ruining perfectly good dark chocolate by shoving some sort of filling into it) and taking me out to dinner at a restaurant that is churning out the meals so fast it's cold before it comes to me.

No, my idea of a romantic Valentine's evening has changed dramatically over the years. Having a blended family of 7 kids, 3 of whom are with us full time, private time for my husband and me is rare (read non-existent.) Also, having said kids and working full time, I'm usually in bed by 9:30. Ah yes, I remember those days when I was single and dinner in NYC only started at 9:30! When you're working parents I find the idea of going out for a date, even Valentine's Day is highly over-rated.

What I want is a date in my own home…alone….in a house without a floor full of Barbie's, a laundry basket full of clothes and a sink full of dishes.

So here's my modern-day, grown-up Valentine's Day Fantasy:

Around 10A the cleaning crew shows up to clean the house top to bottom (OK yes, it will take a crew all day to clean my house by the evening.) The house is infused with different scents one of those beach/sand scents in the living room which will remind me of being in Southern California, cinnamon in the kitchen and lavender in the bedroom. At around 1P I go out for a hike in the woods or, if it's warm enough, head down to the beach (I live in CT now and miss California like crazy.) When I return at 3 my house in spotless and the fairy Godmother has wisked the children away somewhere for the night. I settle down to read a trashy novel in peace for an hour without any interruptions of shuttling kids to activities, breaking up sibling squabbles or helping with homework. It's just me, my vanilla latte and my book! At 4:30 the gourmet chef appears to begin cooking the meal for the evening. I decide to retreat to a warm bubble bath with candles, smooth jazz and a glass of great wine. (I'm actually getting excited imagining this.) When I get out of the bath I look for a cute little black dress with super high heels on to impress my husband. Then I remember he constantly tells me he loves me just the way I am so I change into my coziest sweats and slippers (remember this is my fantasy not his!) The chef disappears leaving the kitchen sparkling. The food is all of our favorites and hubby and I settle down to an incredible dinner with the smooth jazz still playing in the background. (If this was his fantasy the music would have changed to country but fortunately it's not) After dinner the chef and his crew return from the car they were forced to wait in and immediately clear away any evidence of dinner, leaving in its place a perfectly prepared chocolate lava cake with the most delicious vanilla ice cream on top. By now it's probably around 8:30. This is when the fun really begins. We climb into bed for an uninterrupted night of….movies! I watch every "chick flick" I can think of snuggled up in bed. And the hubby watches the chick flicks with me without complaining and even enjoying them!

OK, so for those of you without kids you probably think I'm crazy. But ask any mother out there and I bet she's high-fiving me right about now.
