How to Prevent Cyber Bullying Using Their Weapons Against Them

A movement is growing right in my neighboring town. On Monday, someone from a nearby high school started posting some offensive and degrading Tweets with titles such as “#RHSFagoftheDay,” “#RHSBabeWatch,” “#RHSRumors” and “RHSDailyQueer.” Almost immediately, a student uprising began against the perpetrators. Some students and former alumni started a Facebook page, Southern Connecticut High Schools: An End To High School Bullying. Within 24 hours, the page had 1,000 supporters and growing. Since then the hateful tweets were taken down.

Without a doubt, this shows that our kids are starting to get repulsed by these school bullies. But, unlike teachers and parents, they’re learning to beat the bully at his own game. Sitting the bully and victim down for “a talk” doesn’t do it. The bully keeps at it and the victim gets frustrated and stops asking for help. Nope, it takes people rising up and virally spreading the message that “We Are Intolerant of Intolerance!” It also reinforces what many studies have shown, interveners in a bullying situation can be the most effective prevention.

I get tired of hearing how social media is the evil villain. It’s not – it can be used for great work in the right hands. I believe that parents in a community should start a Facebook page calling out any kid who bullies. Let’s send a message to bullies, their parents and the community at large that we’re mad as heck and we’re not going to take it anymore!
