Holiday Cooking Fire Safety
By The Safety Mom Dec 15 , 2010 | 10:00:00 amPosted in: Fire Prevention Cooking is the leading cause of all winter fires. When entertaining with your friends and family, you want to have a smooth and easy day. Follow these simple and effective tips for a safe and happy holiday season. Happy cooking!
• It’s easy to get distracted when you’re cooking – especially when you have kids around. Never walk away from the stove while you’re cooking.
• Always keep potholders, towels and any other fabrics away from the stove. They are easily flammable and could start a deadly fire. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
• Keep pot handles facing in to prevent kids from tipping them over. Burns from boiling water can result in traumatic consequences.
• If you’re doing a deep-fried turkey for the holidays or cooking with hot oil, be careful that it doesn’t splatter and ignite.
• Never cook in loose clothing. Not only can a sleeve catch fire, it could also drop into boiling water, burning your skin. And always keep your hair tied back away from your face. Not only can it fall into your meal, but also it can and will catch fire quicker than anything else in your kitchen.
• Make sure that you have a smoke detector with working batteries. A smoke detector is of no use if it’s not working! Also, it needs to be connected into your home monitoring system so that the fire department is immediately alerted.
• If you are using a microwave or any other appliance, make sure that you have them plugged into an outlet and not an extension cord. Fires don’t just start with the stove!
