Green Living: 5 Easy Tips for Going GreenBy Child Safety Specialist April 19, 2012 | 11:30 AMPosted in: Family, Home
I’ve come to the conclusion that “going green” is a lot like being on a diet. People get into the mindset that going green is all or nothing and, if they think it’s too hard, then it’s nothing.
But green living doesn’t have to be that way in either case. Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. And, just like setting a good example in healthy eating is important for your kids, so is doing what you can to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Here are a few green living tips that can make a difference in keeping our planet healthy:
-Toss out chemical cleaners – It turns out our grandmothers were right – there really is nothing that can’t be cleaned with white vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda
-Read online – Sure, I still love reading a book in hard cover rather than on a Kindle, but when it comes to newspapers and magazines that get tossed, opt for the online version
-“Save the bows!”…and the wrapping paper – I used to laugh at my mom when, at birthday parties and holidays, she’d be insistent that we save the bows and carefully open the wrapping paper so we could use it again but now I realize she was on to something.
-Put a timer in the bathroom – My daughter is notorious for taking 20 – 30 minute showers so I put a timer in the bathroom and now she gets 15 minutes max!
-Turn your thermostat up and water temperature down – Just a few degrees for both can mean big savings in the long run. When it starts getting warmer out keep your shades drawn to keep it naturally cooler in your house.
