Tomorrow, Friday, February 5 is the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women Day.” The association encourages everyone to speak out and wear red to help raise awareness about heart disease in women.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. The warning signs for heart attacks can be different for women than men. In the case of a heart attack time is extremely important. The sooner someone receives medical attention the more likely she is to survive and recover.

According to the American Heart Association, the most common symptom of heart attacks in both men and women is chest pain. But women can be more likely to experience other symptoms such as the following:

• shortness of breath
• nausea/vomiting
• back or jaw pain

If you think you or someone else is having a heart attack call 9-1-1 immediately. Knowing the signs of a heart attack and calling for help can save a life.

Medical alert systems can save lives, too. Improve your family safety by relying on services such as medical alert systems. If a crisis takes place, users just need to push a button, and the monitoring center will call for help.
