This is National School Bus Safety Week and that’s a good reminder for parents to think about their children’s safety from the time they leave home in the morning until they return in the afternoon.

Getting to and from school isn’t as easy as it was a decade or two ago, when many of us safely walked, biked or rode a bus. Lately, the news has had far too many reports of kids being attacked – even killed – traveling between home and school.

Parents should walk their children to the bus stop and at least one parent should remain until all kids are on the bus. Without adult supervision, children are subject to many of the ills of the community – bullying, assault, drugs and even sex predators and kidnappers. Once on the bus, the safety of the kids is the school’s responsibility.

But that doesn’t always mean that things will go smoothly from there. Bus drivers should be concentrating on driving safely, so they might miss what’s going on in the back of the bus. Talk to your child about the bus ride and see if he or she has any concerns.

Also, make sure your kid’s bus has security cameras on board to maintain control and, if necessary, weed out troublemakers. Going to and from school should be a safe routine. As parents we can help ensure that for our children.
