Driveway Dangers Come to Light; Another Toddler Run Over by Family Car

The non-profit safety organization Kids and Cars reports that 50 children a week are backed over by cars, many of them by family cars at home. Of those 50 children, most between the ages of 12 and 23 months, two will die every week in the U.S.

This sad and shocking statistic is illustrated by a recent story out of Texas, where just this past Easter Sunday a 1-year-old boy was backed over and killed as his grandfather pulled out of the family driveway.

When it comes to car safety, it’s crucial that parents not only teach children that parked cars can become moving cars in a matter of seconds, but they also must pay extra special attention when operating vehicles at all times—including pulling in to the family driveway.

To keep kids safe from driveway dangers at home parents should always:

- Teach children that streets and driveways are not safe places to play, teach them to stick to yards.

- Walk around their cars to make sure they are clear before driving; checking rear-view and side mirrors is often not sufficient- studies have found that SUVs and trucks can have blind zones up to 50 feet.
