Winter is just around the corner and before the cold and snow keep us indoors it’s a good idea to minimize potential fire dangers outside your home.
Walk around your yard and look for dead vegetation that could catch fire. Many homeowners choose to dispose of fallen leaves by burning them. Before doing so check to make sure that open burning is legal in your city or county and get a burn permit if necessary. Then monitor any fire closely and have a water hose nearby should the blaze begin to get out of hand.
During the fall, gutters and rainspouts seem to be a magnet for dry leaves, bark and other debris that can catch fire. So get out the ladder (or call a gutter cleaning service) and make sure they are kept clean. Also be sure to trim tree branches so they don’t overhang gutters.
Propane tanks cause hundreds of explosions and fires each year –the result of overfilling or cracks and leaks. To minimize the potential damage from an explosion, be sure to keep flammable materials far removed from tanks.
These are just a few outdoor fire safety tips that won’t take too much time to complete, yet provide added protection for your home and family.
