Be Prepared for a Disaster – Know Your Resources
By Home Security Source Sep 7, 2010 | 11:05:00 amPosted in: Affordable Security As of 2009, the Citizen Corps National Survey revealed that only 57 percent of Americans surveyed report having supplies set aside in their homes just for disasters, but only 44 percent have a household emergency plan . We never know when nature will decide to unleash its fury upon us, so it’s smart to be prepared. Take some time this month to put an emergency plan in place because you never know when disaster will strike. Here are some valuable resources to help you prepare:
At www.ready.gov , individuals, families, and businesses can find information on how to prepare, plan and stay informed.
Visit Fema.gov for help on how you can plan for emergencies and protect your family as well.
If you have an IPhone, check out the Emicus Reporter iPhone App. You can submit real-time info directly if you see anything happening in your area - a long line at the gas station, flooding, fires - just download the application and you can upload photos and reports, all automatically tied to your current location.
Another useful iPhone app is called Outbreaks Near Me, which tracks H1N1 flu outbreaks. It can be used to alert users when an outbreak is reported in their area and provide real-time outbreak news and information.
Podcasting is another great tool to get ‘ground zero’ information. Many emergency services use Twitter and Facebook to share timely info. Podcasting is a social media tool that delivers audio and video content to subscribers via RSS (Really Simple Syndication). You do not need access to a Twitter or Facebook account, just the RSS Feed URL for a podcast and you can access the podcast from any internet-compatible device.
