Our beloved pets take care of us. They are our best friends; they keep us company, lower our stress levels and some are even capable of saving our lives. In return, we love them right back. If your pet is ever in an emergency situation, knowing how to help them is one of the most caring gestures you can offer. In honor of National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, get prepared so you know what to do before your pet needs you, here’s how:

Get yourself trained. Reach out to your local Red Cross and inquire about training classes. These classes can teach you how to recognize an emergency, give medications, and perform CPR and first aid.

Invest in a guide that lists all types of emergencies you could possibly encounter with your pet and how to respond. It will serve as a great point of reference when you need it. For those with iPhones, there is a handy app called mypetED. You can complete a detailed profile of each pet in your family, your vet contact information and it can quickly tell you the closest vet in the area in case of an emergency.

Just as you need to prepare a first aid kit for your family, you need to buy a pet first aid kit or assemble your own. A few things to include are rubbing alcohol, bandages, gauze, activated charcoal (in case of poisoning), thermometer, muzzle/leash and emergency vet contact information.
