I recently had the opportunity to interview Patrick V. Fiel, Sr., Public Safety Advisor for ADT Security Services for my radio show. As Patrick explained during our interview, “One remark I constantly hear from parents is ‘It can’t happen here.’” From elementary school to college, as parents we need to understand how to keep our kids safe.

As moms, it seems as if we spend half our life in the car driving kids to activities or doing errands. Statistically, the majority of car accidents occur on those everyday quick trips around town. Having your child’s car seat installed properly is important in keeping them safe in the event of an accident. But, believe it or not, over 75% of car seats are either installed or used improperly.

There’s so much in the news about cyberbullying but the good old school-yard bully still exists and can make our kid’s lives miserable. As a parent it’s so hard to send our kids off to school and not worry about their safety. Let’s face it, as much as our schools tell us they have a “zero tolerance” bullying policy, are they really enforcing that?

I was one of those naïve individuals (or maybe the kind who sticks her head in the sand) who never believed something bad could happen in my perfect little town. Who would break into my house? But now, as The Safety Mom, I hear too many stories. I’ve learned not to take anything for granted. No, we can’t live in a bubble or be completely paranoid. But we can take realistic proactive measures to ensure our family’s safety.
